Environment

As a machine tool manufacturer, we address one of the key environmental challenges facing society, the reduction of energy consumption.
Our manufacturing of machine tools and customers’ use of them after delivery involves a massive amount of energy consumption.
We believe that it is our obligation to the environment to reduce the energy consumption that increases with the sales expansion of machine tools.
Technological development for energy conservation and actions in our manufacturing
We develop application technologies ensuring that customers achieve energy conservation by more efficiently using machine tools.
In parallel to these efforts, we continue to improve our own production systems for lowering energy consumption in our own manufacturing of machine tools in our plants.

Governance

We operate in accordance with the basic governance policy below.
  1. We will take appropriate actions to protect shareholders’ rights and equality and endeavor to construct a managerial and supervisory environment that ensures their rights will be appropriately exercised.
  2. We will endeavor to properly collaborate with the diverse stakeholders in our business, helping achieve a medium- and long-term increase of our corporate value.
  3. We will endeavor to disclose information appropriately and to ensure transparency in a bid to offer financial and non-financial information that is accurate and plain to users.
  4. We will endeavor to ensure that the Board of Directors properly fulfills its roles and duties in a bid for a medium- and long-term increase in corporate value.
  5. We will endeavor to build a constructive dialogue with shareholders in a bid for a medium- and long-term increase in corporate value.

Environment

Makino has formulated an environmental policy as set out below.

Makino will always give consideration to the environmental impact of all processes in which its products are produced and used by customers to build a relationship of trust with society.

In accordance with this environmental policy, we will carry out the specific activities mentioned below.

  1. Press ahead with energy and resource conservation
  2. Press ahead with waste reduction
  3. Offer products with low environmental impact
  4. Comply with laws, regulations and voluntary controls
  5. Prevent environmental pollution
  6. Continue to enhance the environmental management system
  7. Build awareness of environmental conservation

Examples of activities

・ Acquisition of ISO 9001 and ISO14001 certification
Acquisition of ISO 9001 and ISO14001 certification Our Atsugi and Fuji Katsuyama Plants have obtained ISO 14001 certification for environmental management systems and ISO 9001 certification for quality management systems.
・ Streamlining of energy consumption
We are striving to clarify the trends in power consumption and to reduce energy consumption per unit of production.

*The data in the diagram reflect values calculated by dividing electric, kerosene and gas energy consumption converted into oil equivalents (in liters) divided by the amount of sales.

*Definition of energy consumption per unit of production: Energy consumption in oil equivalents (in liters) / production (in millions of yen)

・ Development of energy-efficient products
We are working to develop products that may be used with less power consumption than conventional products.
For example, we have developed a product exclusively for processing titanium materials, which are difficult to cut. It exhibits considerably higher cutting efficiency than that of our existing product.

・ Installation of solar panels
An environment without fluctuations in temperature is essential to the production of high-precision machine tools, and a huge amount of energy is consumed in the air conditioning of facilities.
In order to reduce the fossil energy consumed in these critical efforts, we endeavor to increase our use of renewable energy by installing solar panels at our plants and sales offices.
All our facilities that will be constructed in the future are set to be equipped with solar panels.

Efforts to reduce energy consumption for air conditioning
The Kobe Technical Center uses geothermal heat that retains a constant temperature throughout the year to control indoor temperature fluctuation.
The Singapore Plant has cooling water circulated through the ceiling to suppress air conditioning energy consumption due to the environmental conditions of its location, close to the equator and experiencing strong direct sunlight.
It also adopts insulating material in its walls to reduce the impact of outdoor temperature changes.

Governance

Makino endeavors to step up and upgrade its corporate governance with a view towards a medium- and long-term increase in corporate value.

We think that corporate governance is a part of our efforts to secure a medium- and long-term rise in corporate value while giving consideration to diverse stakeholders in accordance with our corporate philosophy and our basic management policy.
Given that the machine tool industry is susceptible to massive fluctuations in performance, we aim to construct effective and efficient corporate governance.
